South African ports face challenges

According to a report on the South African independent media website on April 23, the Western Cape Provincial Government has sent a letter to President Ramaphosa, suggesting that he should expresses concern about challenges that the Cape Town port facing with , and arranges emergency visits to assess what needs to be done to meet the challenges.

Western Cape Financial and Economic Opportunity Councillor David Menir stated that the move was due to President Ramaphosa’s recent visit to the Port of Durban and his pledge to ensure that the port’s efficiency and competitiveness will be improved.

In view of the widespread attention to the Port of Durban, the Port of Cape Town may be removed from the priority position in the overall strategy in the future, and there will be no infrastructure investment in the short term.

According to the report, the Port of Cape Town is currently facing multiple infrastructure challenges, mainly due to insufficient equipment maintenance and investment. In the fiscal year 2020 to 2021, there were about 5,064 equipment failure incidents at the Cape Town port. Most of the equipment failures were caused by the equipment having reached its mid-lifetime.
