Vietnam is planning to invest in the construction of world-class ports. The Ministry of Transport of the country emphasized its success in port development over the past 20 years and stated that it plans to invest approximately US$6 billion to US$8 billion in the next stage of port development by 2030.

After 20 years of planning, Vietnam's seaport system has made great progress in quality and quantity, and basically reached the development goals under the approved plan. However, in order to meet the demand for import and export goods and achieve the goal of economic development, the Ministry of Commerce of Vietnam needs a large amount of investment to further expand the capacity of Vietnamese ports.
The Ministry of Transport of Vietnam reviewed plans to strengthen the focus of port development, including seaports, ports, docks, buoys, waters, and the development of seaports and waters in 2030.
The Deputy Minister emphasized: Vietnam’s ports have grown from nearly 82 million tons of cargo in 2000 to more than 680 million tons in 2020. Despite the impact of the epidemic, the throughput of Vietnam’s ports in 2020 has increased by 4%.
As of the beginning of 2020, Vietnam has increased its berths by more than 8 times in the past 20 years, adding a total of 588 berths in 34 ports, and established international transshipment ports in northern and southern Vietnam. At present, Vietnam has the capacity to berth 132,000 tons of container ships at Lach Huyen Wharf and 214,000 tons of container ships at Cai Mingpu Wharf.
The goal of the next stage of the development of Vietnam’s ports is to increase Vietnam’s annual cargo capacity to 1.14-20 billion tons, and will focus on the development of Haiphong Port and Cai Ming Port to meet international standards.
